FATAL ACCIDENT

RONGOTAI MISHAP INQUEST FINDING (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The finding at the inquest on Squad-ron-Leader M. C. McGregor was delivered to-day. The coroner, Mr. EGilbertson, found that Squadron-Leader McGregor died from injuries sustained through the crashing of the aeroplane of whicli he wasi the pilot when landing at Rongotai aerodrome, the fatal accident being caused by the aeroplane in its descent, colliding with the mast of the anemometer near the aerodrome boundary. The coroner said that the existence of tho anemometer mast must, he thought, have been known to the deceased, who had made previous landings there. The proximity of tho mast to tho course he was taking may have escaped deceased's recollection in tho difficult weather existing, or if deceased recalled it the gusty wind, may have foreshortened his descent more than he realised. The mast would be difficult to pick up through the rain bespattered windscreen.

The coroner referred to the suitability of the anemometer building, which was raised at the hearing, and said that it was a matter for experts to decide whether a safer spot consistent with its adequately serving its purpose could bo found.
