LADIES' CRICKET

P.B. BEAT NAPIER GAME PLEASES WATCHERS The game of cricket has taken a strong hold among) the ladies of both Poverty Bay and Hawke's Bay and the first of what is hoped will he an annual fixture between the two districts was played at McLean Park, Napier, on Saturday, resulting in a win for Poverty Bay by an innings and 141 runs. the' small crowd of spectators was amazed at the ability of the Poverty Bay team in. playing a game which hitherto has been considered only for men, and the api)lause which greeted the team on leaving the field was full proof that they considered the standard of play throughout the game was very good. On winning) the toss, Napier elected to hat, but. could no nothing against the accurate attack of Misses G. Mortimer and P. Sim, who', in the course of 11 overs, dismissed their opponents for 14 runs. Miss G. Mortimer, a fast right handed bowler, secured the excellent figures of seven wickets for eight runs, while Miss D. Sim's medium-paced deliveries accounted for three wickets for five runs.

Misses, G. Mortimer and .1. Wells opened the Poverty Bay innings and immediately started to score quickly. Miss G. Mortimer hit hard and reached the century mark after just over an hour at the crease. At 112 she was nicely caught in the slips by Miss Kelly off the bowling of Miss Moyle, who was keeping a steady length. The first wicket, had added 163 runs, Miss Wells being) not out with 50.

Miss Sharp followed and the score advanced to 199 before Miss WeUs hit her wicket after scoring an admirable 67. At 209 the innings was declared closed, leaving Napier with 196 to get to avoid an innings defeat. Batting a second time. Napier did much better, the total reaching 54 before the last wicket fell. Miss Webster, with 21. and Miss Kelly, 13, displayed some nice strokes. Miss G. Mortimer once again was the destroying factor, irig the inningis with five wickets for 13 runs off eight overs, while Misses N. Mitford, two for one, D. Sim, one for four, and M. Sim. one for one, also bowled well.

The fielding of the two teams throughout was excellent, few chances going astray, while Miss A. Anderson, in Napier's first innings', took two really good catches, one by throwing herself full lengith and taking the catch onehanded.

The Napier spectators were very pleased with the showing put up by the two teams and after the match the Poverty Bay team was entertained at dinner arid a picture evening, thoroughly enjoying the splendid hospitality extended them. Endeavours are being made for a return match to be played at Easter in Gisborne. when Poverty Bay supporters of the game will be given an opportunity of seeing the two teams in action.
