GALE SWEEPS BRITAIN

HAVOC CAUSED AT SHOW PLEASURE TRIP CHECKED FORCED BACK TO PORT (British Official Wireless.) Rec. 9.30 a.m. RUGBY, Sept. 19. Continued high winds have done much damage in various parts of the country to-day. At the Thames show in Oxfordshire, the largest one-day agricultural show held in Britain, the proceedings were brought to a standstill by the havoc of the gale. Tents and booths wero blown down and several people suffered minor injuries. A marquee 400 ft. long, housing floral exhibits, was blown down and hundreds of pounds’ worth of damage was done to the blooms.

The storm in the Channel caused the luxury steamer, Queen of the Channel, to turn back when on a pleasure cruise from Margate to Calais.
