UNDERGRAD IN COURT
“MAYFAIR MANNERS” LONDON, Sept. 8. A reference to “cheap Mayfair manners” was made at Folkestone Police Court on Saturday by Mr. Percy Rowland, entertainments manager to Folkestone Corporation. Two Cambridge undergraduates. Charles Desmond T. Cassidy, of Jesus College, and Alan Alexander D. Mitcliell, of Peterhouse, were bound over to be of good behavior" for 12 months and ordered to pay 4s costs after they had pleaded guilty to “being idle and disorderly persons jiy disturbing the public peace.” When the case was called Mitchell had not appeared. Cassidy was asked where he was, and he said that he supposed lie was finishing his bath at the hotel.
A police officer was sent to the hotel, and Mitchell afterwards came into court smiling. The Chairman, Engineer RearAdmiral L. ,T. Stevens, said it was a serious matter going into court laughing like that, and Mitchell only made the case worse.
Constable Ball stated that at 12.50 a.m. on Saturday he found Cassidy and Mitchell shouting and blowing a hunting-horn. After they had refused to go away he took them into custody. When charged Cassidy said, “Disorderly, yes, but I deny being idle.” Mitchell said: “Definitely not idle.” Mr. Rowland stated that during a danco at Leas Cliff Hall a coach horn was sounded. It was blown from 10 to 15 times during the dance. “I am very tolerant of youth at the hall,” said Mr. Rowland, “but I cannot have the enjoyment of the public attending functions there spoiled by ono or two fellows with cheap Mayfair manners.”
Engineer Rear-Admiral Stevens said he unite understood that young people stepped over the traces sometimes, but there were about 700 people present, including ladies, and some of them might easily have been frightened.
