VESSEL FAST ON REEF
ASHORE NEAR FIJI WARSHIP STANDING BY , fiUVA, July 28. The Hoegh Trader, from New' Westminster, bound for Adelaide, stranded on Horseshoe Reef, 60 miles north of Fiji, at ]0.30 last night, when going at, a speed of 11 knots. The vessel is laden with timber. Tart of the deck cargo has been unloaded. 11.M.5. Leith was standing by, but did not attempt to tow the Hoegh Trader off, on account of the- fear that she might sink, as the damage will not be ascertainable till the forward hold is cleared of cargo.
TIMBER JETTISONED (Received Julv 29, 11.20 a.m.) " SUVA, July 29. The Hoegh Trader is still stranded. Number one hold is flooded. Timber is being jettisoned and an attempt to tow her off will be made when she is suflicieutly lightened. It is stated that the logs thrown overboard may be dangerous to navigation, and ships have been requested to keep a sharp look-out for heavy timber jettisoned from the stranded vessel in tbo viciuity of Horseshoe Reef.
The Director-General of the Post and Telegraph Office has received a message broadcast by tho steamer Hoegh Trader, which states that sho stranded on Horseshoe Shoal, latitude 17.39 south, longitude 179,17 cast, states a Wellington message. She is in communication with the Monterey and has requested her to stand by awaiting orders for an S.O.S. signal. She is also in communication with the Aorangi, which is 310 miles from Horseshoe Shoal, The Hoegh Trader reported at 11.45 pan. that she was in no imificdiate' danger. Tho ship is hard on a rock and is trying to got off by her own power, but it is doubtful. The crew are standing by tho lifeboats.
