The explosion was so terriffic that debris and fragments of bodies were tiling great distances, and windows were smashed miles away.

A pall of smoko and fumes hampered the rescue work, which soldiers and Black .Shirts immediately began. It i s believed that nobody working in the department escaped death. An eye-witness relates that a great sheet of flamy went up from one shed, accompanied by a deafening report which was echoed as neighboring sheds exploded. Weeping crowds surrounded the gates, seeking new's of their relatives.
