OBITUARY
MRS. EDWARD COATES (Por Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. Advice was received at the office of the Minister of Finance to-day that Mrs Edward Coates, mother of the Minister of Finance, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, died at 9 a.in. on Saturday ather home at Matakohe, Kaipara. The, late Mrs Coates, who was a daughter of the late Dr. Thomas Aitkin, of Auckland, was 84 years of age. Although she never took a personal part in political affairs, she was well known in her own district, and took a keen interest in the political life of her son. Mrs Coates resided, at the old homestead at Hu at mi a-, where the Coates f ami Jr have lived for ;>0 years oi more, and enjoyed fairly good health. Bhe was taken ill a. few days ago and her condition was said to be serious eniliet in the week, but as there was no indication of a turn for the worse the news of her death came as a shock. Mr Coates, who is still in England, has been advised by cable. Hie t uncial will take place from her home at 2 p.in. on Monday. With the death of Mrs. J. Brannigan recently there was lost to Stietfoid on* more of that small band of pioneers who were the first settlers of the town. Mis. Brannigan was the third woman Soft let in Stratford.
