FIRE IN WANGANUI
SHOP BADLY DAMAGED (Per Press Association.) WANGANUI, last night. Woolworths’ Store in the main shopping area was badly damaged by five early this morning. The whole of the Wanganui firefighting forces were engaged in the difficult task of combating the flames, and their work was made mere difficult. by the dense smoke and fumes from burning cellulose articles. The shop on the ground floor suffered extensively from lire and water, the front, portion being gutted. lii -the storeroom upstairs, where it is thought the fire started, only the back of the building escaped. The insurances ar rt not available, but. it is estimated the damage will run into several thousands ot pounds.
