CIGARETTE SMOKING

DRY WEATHER BAN URGED PREVENTION QP FIRES "1 think that cigarette smokers should be prohibited in the country in dry seasons," said Mr. \V. P. Spencer at a meeting in Christ church of the Selwyn Plantation Board. It was reported that the. board had suffered serious losses iu the fire at Brooklands. Mr. R. Nairn said that the board had suffered a fairly severe loss when the fin; swept nearly 50 acres of a, board plantation—one of the first that had been planted. In a year or two the plantation would have been ready to cut foi timber. Many persons camped there in the summer and the wonder was that it had escaped being burned before this. A member: Have you any idea how the fire was started?

Mr. Spencer: We don't know for certain, bui some shooters were seen in the locality of the fire just before it broke out. Probably they threw down a cigarette end. The serious part of it is that they were full-grown trees and practically ready for milling. A lot of fires are caused by cigarette-smoking, and in dry years it should be prevented in the country. , The chairman, Mr. G. S. Ellis: We are not in Italv.

Mr. Spencer: And fam not a Hitler, but I do think this smoking should be stopped.
