OPOTIKI DOMAIN
PINE TREES
As a. result of hard work by an enthusiastic band of voluntary workers Opotiki has a beautiful domain within easy reach of the town. Known as the Hikutaia Domain, it iis situated in the Soldiers' Settlement at Woodlands and was. originally a part of Mr. J 3. M. Hutchison's estate, which was bought for returned soldiers by the Government.
When the survey was made it was recognised that this particular piece of bush would make an ideal domain and if was declared a reserve by the Government, and control was vested in a board. The domain contains a ''•mums p" iri free 88ft. in circumference, which has been regarded as a
saerea nee by tin; Maoris for many generations, it is also claimed that I lie domain contains one of the most complete collections of native trees in New Zealand. Over .">"i) new frees iiiive been planted, some of which lime conic from the Chatham Islands and from all parts of both Iho North and South Islands of New Zealand. The trees have been carefully labelled, and (here tire at least ifjO different varieties.
