EX-WAIROA MAN HONORED

PRESENTATION IN DUNEDIN

Tho many friends in the Wairoa district of Mr. John Bowie, as well as the old boys of tho Wairoa School, will be glad to leum of that gentleman, who was headmaster of the Wairoa School for 17 years, as well as being a very capable church worker. He lias been in Dunedin a number of years, and recently tho teaching stall' of the Macandrew road school farewelled their headmaster, Mr. John Bowie, 8.A., who has been in charge of the school since May 1, 1924. Mr. A. H. Robinson, first assistant, on behalf of the staff, in presenting Mr. Bowie with an initialled attacho case, referred to his long period of service as headmaster of the school, and wished him a long and happy retirement after his 44 years’ service as a public school teacher. Complimentary speeches were made by other members of the staff, Misses Wilson, infant mistress, Green, and McCrone, and Messrs. R-. L. Luke, .J Cumberbeach, on behalf of the junior teachers, and J. K. Thomson; speaking for the teachers of the technical branches. Mr. Bowie suitably responded. Again, in the South Dunedin Town Hall, at the distribution of prizes to the senior classes of the Macandrew road School, references were made to the approaching retirement on superannuation of the headmaster, Mr. John Bowie. The chairman, Mr. A. T. Mclndoe, explained that a more formal farewell had been arranged to be held in February, 1935, after the reopening of the school, but various speakers took the opportunity of eulogising the work done by Mr. Bowio as headmaster of the school. Of these, Mr. Fred Jones, M.P., Mr. James Wallace, chairman of the Otago Education Board, as well as Canon Button and Mr. W. Wright, at the prizegiving to the junior classes, all spoke highly of the way the school had been guided, and wished Mr. Bowie many years of happy retirement. In taking farewell of the parents present, Mr. Bowie outlined his teaching career.
