SOUTH ISLAND TOURNEY (Per Press Association.) ASHBURTON, this day.
The South Island croquet champonship tournament was opened this morning by the Mayor, Mr. Woods 1 . The weather is overcast and the greens holding, but improving.
There are 167 entries from contestants in all parts of the South Island, and many from the North, including A. G. F. Ross, who is defending the open title against 12 others; Mrs. W. N. Corbett, the women’s title holder; Ross and Mrs. J. T. Wilson, the doubles champions, and also Mesdames W. F. Caldon (Wellington) and C. A. Watkins (Hastings). The handicap doubles are being played to-day.
