A SAFE LANDING

STRATOSPHERE BALLOON RECORD NOT BROKEN (Received Nov. 22, 11 a.m.) BRIDGETON, New Jersey, Nov. 21. Commander T. W. Settle and Maior L. Fordney, in the stratosphere balloon, safely landed near hero early to-day. Commander Settle's altitude is above that reached by Professor Piccard, but is about a mile less than that claimed y the Russian balloonists on September 40. Tho landing this morning followed a night of uncertainty as to the balloon s position. Early last evening, Commander Settle was estimated to be somewhere over Delaware, Now Jersey, preparing to land as soon as possible. He had gained an altitude of 58,000 ft. according to the reading of the altimeter within the gondola, stated a radio telephone to the naval authorities at Washington. Commander Settle declared that lie was busy with the instruments and expected interesting scientific findings as the, result of the trip. Communication with the balloon was later cut off, as Commander Settle had dumped bis battery and other paraphernalia overboard. He still had his receiving set, however.
