SOCIALISTS’ DEFEAT
THE ELECTIONS IN SPAIN PERSECUTION BL AM ED LONDON, Nov. 21. Tho Daily Express’ Madrid correspondent attributes the defeat of the Socialists and Republicans largely to the brutal manner in which the new Stato has been separated from the church. The destruction of convents and of monasteries and tho persecution of nuns and monks was a nightmare for the Catholic women. Moreover, agricultural reforms which the Republican leaders promised have not materialised. There are 750 000 acres less under cultivation than during the reign of King Alfonso Scnor Gil Gobles, the 34-year-old leader of the Popular Action Paitj, is jubilant at the party’s success. Scnorita Clara Campoamcr, a Radical deputy, who .was mainly responsible for the women’s suffrage, has been unseated, as have also six Cabinet members, headed by the Premici, Scnor Barrios.
