HOLIDAY CRUISES BOOKINGS IN AUSTRALIA SYDNEY, pet. 19. A general confidence in business prospects throughout Australia is indicated by the increased bookings for the 1954 overseas tourist season in all the capital cities. Already berths are at a premium in liners leaving in March and April next year. The Orient liner Orford, which' will take the Australian test cricket team to England, will carry the largest number of saloon passengers taken in any ship for a number of years. The tourist class liners Ormonde, Moldavia, Ursova- and Mongolia, which will servo the overseas tourist traffic, are now practically booked out in their higherpriced accommodation. The Aberdeen and Commonwealth Lino and the R. and O. branch lino of one class ships aro also heavily booked for next year. Tourist agents in Melbourne and Sydney organising specially conducted tours over itineraries in Europe and England report that the bookings made with them are phenomenal. It is likely that some of these tours will have to be duplicated to accommodate all applicants. Holiday cruises around the Australian coast and to Noumea and Fiji, which are planned for next year, are now practically filled. The Katoomba and Karoola, which are making cruises to the Barrier Reef, have only a few cabins left, and the Dimboola will make its first cruise with a full complement. It was considered that the advent of holiday cruises around the Australian coast might diminish the number of overseas bookings, but the general opinion now is that they have created a “sea travel” sense and have actually been the means of inducing people to make the longer trip to Europe., A large number of English tourists, making the round trip to Australia, will arrive in the Orient liners Oroides and Orford and tlio I*, and O. liners Mooltan and Strathnaver.
