BAY OF PLENTY RESORT NATIVES’ GENEROUS AID Native landowners on the Hay of Plenty coast between Upotiki and Gape Runaway, the. splendid new scenic route which writ be open to holiday traffic this summer, have displayed tlie utmost willingness to co-operate with the Automobile Association in the provision of suitable and attractive camping sites for touring motorists. During tne recent visit to the coast of the touring manager, Mr. R. F. Ghamptalou'p, with other officers oi the association, the native land-owners held a meeting with regard to the areas oi land which they had generously offered as reserves, and at Unit meeting certain decisions regarding the control and uses of the reserves were reached.

If was agreed that the areas should lie reserves for all time, and that the owners should have the right ol naming them, the trustees to he appointed by tlie Native hand ‘Court. The following committee of administration.was appointed : Messrs. Delamere Waehana, Te Ara Ngamoke, Tolu lvopu, Willie Allison, Waiariki Matieu, Hori Alio, Watene Ruha, Dick Stirling, Kuaha Waititi, Paora Matenga, J. Neilson, and Dr. W. Repa. T lie meeting approved the following regulations: (1) That no fires be lit except in places provided by the committee. (2) That no young trees or ferns be taken or trees or scrub cut or mutilated in any way, and that the whole area be preserved in its natural state 1 5) That the clause regarding scrub be subject to this exception, that the com inittee rnay grant permission to remove scrub interfering with the pitching oi a camp, or that areas of scrub may be cut by the committee for the purpose of burning and clearing to enable native trees to be planted. (4) That appropriate notices be erected warning visitors that such areas are reserves, and that the names of the different reserves bo printed on such notices. (5) That campers must destroy all refuse and leave the ground clean on vacating camp. (6) That no charge be made for camping. (7) That a penalty not exceeding £SO may be imposed by the court against anyone convicted of a breach of these regulations. The. Automobile Association has offered to help with the provision of signs, and the issuing of definite instructions for visitors. Gratitude to the landowners for their offer has been expressed by the touring manager in a letter to the Minister of Native Affairs, the Hon. Sir Apirnha Ngata. Mr. Oliarnptaloup states that the Automobile Association feels that the action of the, landowners in setting aside certain areas oil which motorists will be permitted to camp will be a safeguard against any outside interference, and will enable the motoring organisation to eater more effectively for tb>‘ requirements of visitors to the dis triet,
