RAILWAY REPORT
MINISTER’S SANCTION ADVICE TO THE MAYOR. MR THORNTON TO PROCEED Advice of the .Minister of Public Works' sanction having been given lor the preparation of reports and plans relating to the (Usborne-Wai-kokopu railway section, for the purposes ol the district railway committee, was received to-day hy the Mayor, -Mr. .1. Jackson, in a letter from the Minister. The iatimution was in the form of a reply t,o the Mayor’s request tor the. release of information in the flies of the Public Works Department, covering the estimates of costs of construe lion between Waikokopu and Gis 'home. This information is expected to prove of considerable value m connection with the elfort to interest a private syndicate in the completion and operation of the line northward of Wairoa.
The Minister, the Hon. .T. Hitcliener. w'rote to Mr. Jackson as follows: —“J have pleasure in facilitating the in formation' you desire airT I have in st meted my . depart ment to lake the necessary steps accordingly. The necessary report in 1 his connection will be prepared by Mr. U. G. Thornton, district engineer at Gisborne.” The letter has no reference to the proposal to ask for the services of Mr. Thornton, to make a complete survey of the construction costs and economic possibilities of the line. It applies only to the request for access to the files of the department, but in view ,of the attitude of the Mmisi,-. with regard to the original request, the Mayor is optimistic as to the probable action of Mr. Hitcliener on the later application.
