(Herald Correspondent.) A sudden shift of the wind on Alonday to the south brought heavy rain, and a decided fall in the temperature. The anniversary of the proclamation of New Zealand as a Dominion was marked in Wairoa only by the closing of banks and offices. The Fire Brigade ball was the only public function organised. The Wairoa Homing Pigeon Club staged another flight last week-end, from Wellington, 220 miles. There were 16 starters in this, the senior event, and it resulted: -G. Zukris, 1150yds per minute, 1 • G. Brown, 1149yds, 2; G. Zukris, 1148yds, 3. The junior event was from Napier to Wairoa, and resulted:—Miss E. Smith, 1; G. Simpson, 2; W. Telford, 3. This race assured the cup to Aliss Smith. The next race will be from Picton. The final of the knock-out Rugby football competition on Saturday resulted in a win for Muhin by six points to three after a rather ragged game. Last Wednesday’s basketball giamesi resulted :—A grade: High school 17 v. Rovers 1; High School and Redwing played a drawn game, 16 all; Waiuu 13 v. Tapuae 1. B grade: Convent Did Girls 5 v. Kiwi 9; High School 16 v. Tapuae nil. The fixtures for to-morrow are:—Waiau v. Ex-High, at Frasertown, 4 p.m. (this is a challenge match for the Osier Cup); Kiwi v. Redwing, school grounds, 4.15 p.m. ; High School v. Rovers, school grounds, 3.30 p.m. The late Airs. Jane Owen, formerly of Napier, and who died at Christchurch recently at the age of 71 years, leaves anioii" a large family one son, Mr. Jack Owen, in Wairoa.- —Mr. O. Johansen, and his son, Bert, have left for Norsewood to attend the funeral of the former’s step-brother, Mr. Andrew ■Olsen, who died on Sunday, lie leaves one daughter in Gisborne, Aliss Dolly Olsen.—Mrs. J. E. Svensen has gone to Auckland, via Rotorua, on holiday. A surprise party visited the residence of Mr. and Mrs. W. Coker, North Clyde, last week to tender their felicitations to their daughter, Miss Clare Coker, on the attainment of her majority. A pleasant time was spent by all, and after supper Airs. Herbert, on behalf of' those present, handed Miss Coker a handsome crystal howl. The singing of “Auld Lang Svne” brought the function to a close.

Air. Tom French lias been appointed manager of the Hawke’s Bay colts football team to play Taihape and Wanganui. In connection with the ‘‘Youth for Youth’’ movement initiated by St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, the members oT the Bible classes are to entertain the members and friends of the congregation at a social function on Thursday night.

Last Thursday the annual flower show in connection with the Wairoa Women’s Institute was held. . The judges were Airs. Vaughan, decorative, and Air. Apedaile, blooms. The two cups were won by Airs. M. W. Butterfield, and Ihe balance of a long prize list was fairly well distributed.
