(Herald Correspondent.) Five schools —Homebrook, Matawai, Motuhora, Whakarau, and Motu—took part in a games tournament held at Motu on Saturday. Everything possible for the smooth running of the tournament was accomplished by the teachers and committees concerned, and children and adults thoroughly enjoyed the day’s sport. Some excellent games of football and basketball were witnessed, the winning teams in both sections showing good form and the results of splendid training. Two boys received minor injuries at football. Selwyn Davis, Whakarau, received injuries to his elbow which necessitated it being attended to by the district nurse, and another small boy, Ashdown, Matawai,* had a nasty kick on the leg which had to be dressed. The Motu School Committee provided afternoon tea, and all the ar-
rangements for catering for the large crowd of spectators and children were very capably carried out. Motu schoolgirls won the cup for basketball, and Motuhora boys won the football cup. In presenting the cups at the end of the tournament, Air. U. S. Caulton, the chairman, congratulated the winning teams and remarked what a splendid arrangement this annual tournament was and how very much it added to the happiness of sciiool life. Miss Betty Fisher, captain of the winning team, received the cup and returned thanks. Geoffrey Smith, captain of the Motuhora football team, thanked the Al.otu School Committee and all who had helped to make the day such a happy one. The following arc the results of the games pluj'ed:— Basketball. —Motuhora beat Whakarau; Alotu beat Matawai and Homebrook (combined); Alotu beat Whakarau; Afotu beat Motuhora; MatawaiHomebrook beat Whakarau; MatawaiHomebrook beat Motuhora. Points: Alotu six, Matawai-Homebrook four, Motuhora two, Whakarau nil. Football. —Afotuh.ora, played four, won four; Afotu, played three, won two, lost one and won one by default; Matawai, played four, lost four; Whakarau, played four, won one, lost two, drew one; Homebrook, played three, won one, lost one, drew one, and lost one by default. Points: Motuhora eight, Alotu six, Whakarau three, Homebrook three, Matawai nil. Afiss Cook was the official timekeeper and scorer for basketball, and Aliss Colley and Air. Hankin refereed all the matches. Aressrs. F. Cleary, F. Read, A. Webb, M. Williams, and C. Lopdell refereed all football matches. The last of the euchre tournaments to he held in the school took place on Saturday night at Alotuhora. The final for aggregate points will take place in the hall next Saturday night, when the school committee hopes to surpass all attendances, concluding with a dance. The successful players are: Mrs E. Derccourt and Air. N. Richardson, and consolation prizes were given to Air. and Airs Shepherd. Miss C. Guthrie-Smith is visiting Mr and Mrs A. Smith, Alotuhora.— Airs E. B. Thompson has returned to her home at Whakarau after an extended visit io her son, Air. Alex. Thompson, Te Kuiti.—Airs K. P. Fisher’s friends will he pleased to learn that she is progressing favorably after an operation which she underwent last Friday.
The committee of the Alotu Rugby Sub-union has decided to hold the annual ball and cup presentation nt Alotu this week.
