TE KOOTI’S CAMPAIGN

ANNIVERSARY OF DEFEAT One of several detents suffered by the rebel chief Te Kooti toward the close of his long campaigning took place on September 25, 1869. On that date Te Kooti, with a force of 560 men, attacked the Tokaanu pa, Luke Taupo, which was occupied by 240 friendly natives. Colonel T. McDonnell, who was commanding, the Taupo Field Force, was on a visit to the pa at the time, and, failing to reach another body of Maoris under Major Kemp, lie returned and placed himself at the head of the Tokaanu men. Te Kooti’s llauhaus attacked from scrub-covered hills above Tokaanu, blit were driven off after a sharp engagement. They had to evacuate cover after cover and finally broke and ran.

The rebels lost seven dead and had about two dozen wounded, whereas the friendly force lost no lives and had six wounded.
