NATIONAL ROSE GARDEN

BEGUN AT CANBERRA CANBERRA, Sept. 13. The national rose garden of nine acres, which is to contain 23,000 roso bushes given to the nation by people in all parts of the Commonwealth, was begun at Canberra to-day. The, Minister for the Interior, Mr. Perkins, planted the first bush in one of the specially prepared garden plots.

The beds are laid out in such a way that tlihy resemble the petals of two huge roses, and will present a striking picture wiien the flowers are in bloom. So far 38 public bodies and many private citizens in every State have sent bushes for planting, and many others have been promised. The president of the Canberra Horticultural Society, Mr. F. A. Piggin, who introduced the Minister at the opening ceremony this afternoon, said that at present provision was being made for about 8000 roses, hut the ultimate aim was 23,000.
