Stories of Italy
least one London critic thinks that Luigi Pirandello’s latest book is earmarked for immortality. Thirteen short stories are collected under the title, “Better Think Twice About It.” The scene of the stories is Italy; the lie of the peasant or the petit bourgeois is described; but, as in all great work, scene, class and time tire subordinate to the universal themes of love and hate, ago, poverty and death. “The sadness ,of many of the stories,” wrote on reviewer,” is not depressing; the gentle melancholy of this philosopher and poet is far removed from the angry bellowings of tragedy in our time. His mirth and , his irony are tempered with the same j humanity; here is neither malice nor derision, but the mellow laughter ot one who has drunk the wine of life.”
