IMPORTED MEAT

INDICATION OF ORIGIN ADVANTAGE TO THE EMPIRE OPPOSITION FROM NEW ZEALAND (Eloc. Tel. Copyright—United Tress Assn.) (Received Jan. 3. noon.) LONDON, Jan. 2. The Ministry of Agriculture is hearing an application by the National Farmers’ Union for compulsory marking to indicate flic origin of imported meat. The Now Zealand Meat Importers’ Board, the Imported Meat Traders’ Association, and other organisations are opposing the National Farmers’ Union.

Counsel said that Now Zealand importers suggested that' the granting of the application would infringe on the Ottawa agreements, and, therefore, it was very peculiar that the Australian Commonwealth Government favored the application if 't could be done in a roasonable manner.

He suggested that it would further the spirit of these agreements, because there was a prevalent- desire to purchase Empire in preference to foreign produce. Tim people would he able to distinguish Australian from Argentine beef, and an order would give Empire produce a gigantic advantage. LONDON AGENT’S OPINION (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Mr. Sidney Fitter, of a London firm of agents for New Zealand meat, arrived bv tbe Mariposa. lie said the quota system would stabilise the meat trade in Britain. Last year New Zealand lamb at low prices found many new buyers and their demand might be sustained even if prices improved.
