RUATORIA NEWS

(Herald Correspondent.)

The second birthday of the Ruatoria Women’s Institute was celebrated in a delightful manner on Thursday at “Puketiti,” the homo of Mr. A. B. Williams, the function being attended by 50 members, togethers with 10 husbands and many children. A squareshaped two-tier birthday cake, beautifully decorated, had been prepared by Mrs. Kyan for the occasion, and was much admired, while the silver bowl won at the Poverty Bay A. and P. Show also was exhibited.

Tho meeting opened with the institute song, followed by a business talk, and Mrs. Wicksteed gave a resume of Bishop Bennett’s address to the federation meeting. On behalf of the committee, Mrs. Bullard expressed warm appreciation of the work done by the president and secretary, and explained that the committee had decided to show its appreciation with flowers; little Betty Burton then presented Mrs Wicksteed with a beautiful bouquet of red roses, and Ann Williams presented a bouquet of pink and white roses to Miss Smith.

The party inspected the grounds until 3.30 p.m., when afternoon tea was served on the verandah. The soft toy competition was won by Miss Clark, with 13 votes, and Mrs. Smyth was second with 12 votes. Bathing was indulged in, and many of the members took a further opportunity to inspect the‘beautiful grounds, with their profusion of blooms, assembling finally to express their thanks to Mr. Williams, and to the hostesses, Mesdames G. Cotterill, Harley Evans, and Kirkham, and Miss K. Beale, the function being brought to a close by tho singing of the National Anthem.

A dance in aid of the Te Pm’a Hospital X-ray fund was held in the Mariutalii Hall and a very large number of people attended. Mr. D. Kirkham was M.C., and the music was provided bv the Moonlight Jazz Band. The supper, which was on a. lavish scale, was dispensed by the ladies of the district and was thoroughly enjoyed. The floor was taxed to accommodate the dancers. The use of the hall was given to the organisers free of charge and this meant that the total proceeds. £l2 odd, would all be available for tho fund.
