ATTACK ON A JOCKEY

TIMELY AID FOR BOY KIDNAPPING EFFORT FAILS A desperate and brazen attempt was made on November 5 to kidnap Frank Egli, an apprentice jockey, from his homo at Randwick, Sydney. Frustrated in his plan to force Egli into a waiting car, after ho had threatened to “do for him,” a stranger savagely attacked the lad. almost breaking his arm. The threat was made because Egli'a mount, Exchequer, was left at the barrier in the Maiden Handicap at the Rosehill races that afternoon. “I’ll teach you to pull a horse!” snarled the man, as he fought with Egli, and tried to drag him into the car, which was drawn up outside the house where the apprentice boards. Egli, who is only 17 years of age, and weighs not over 7st., had no chance against his opponent, a man of strong build and weigiiing nearly 13st. The jockey was only a few font away from the car when Leo O’Sullivan, ail ex-jockey, rushed to his aid. O’Sullivan managed to pull Egli free. “Get inside, ouick!” he shouted to the lad, as the desperate man turned on him.

O’Sullivan managed to hold the stranger off until a number of othermen arrived. Even then tho stranger tried to forco Iris way into the house. Eventually he was pulled into tho car by a, man who had been standing some distance away and Hie vehiclo drove oil at topi speed.
