POVERTY RAY EXECUTIVE I HAWKE CUP CHALLENGE In view of Poverty Bay’s victory against Waiapu in tho elimination match, the Poverty Bay Cricket Association’s management committee, at its meeting last evening, resolved to enter immediately a challenge for the Hawke Gup. Tho meeting was presided over by Mr. H. E. Maude, and there were present also Messrs. A. C. Woodfield, <T. Price, L. Thomson, B. Connop, P. C. Dwyer,- A. Bignall, A. R. Baker, and J. W. Blathwayt, acting secretary. The positions of the senior teams were reported to be as follow : —Old Boys, 19 ; Civil Service, 16; High School, 11; Gisborno Club, 10 ; City, 8; Turnnganui, 8.
The draw for the week resulted as follows:—
Thursday.—R.S.A. v. Nomads; Cash Stores v. Wanderers. Saturday. —Seniors : Turanganui v. Gisborne, No. 1 wicket; Civil Service v. Old Boys, No. 2; City v. High School, No. 3. Second grade: Marist a - . Athletic, at the Oval; High School A v. High School B, at the High School. Third grade : Marist v. Primary Schools, at the school; High School A v. High School B, at tile school.
The grounds committee reported that the wickets were playing well, and that the repairs to the practice nets had been carried out.
A letter was before the Now Zealand Cricket Council last Friday from 1. B. Cromb, making application to be exempted from his contract with the council not to accept an overseas engagement until two years after the New Zealand team’s English tour. Cromb stated that he was leaving for England in March. It was decided that the application bo held over until a subsequent mooting.
“I am strongly of the opinion that we, as an association, should not agree to a Sunday match,” said Mr. W. Simpson at a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Cricket Association, when a request for a match on Sunday, December 4, was received from the ’West Coast association. Mr. W. L. King, the chairman, endorsed Mr. Simpson’s view. “I don’t think we should advance that as our reason.” said Mr. F. A. Jarrett. “We should just' say it is impracticable.” Mr. Simpson said that it should bo stated straight out that a Sunday match could not bo entertained. Finally, it was decided to reply that it was impracticable to undertake the match.
