AMATEUR ATHLETICS
INITIAL TRACK MEET INTERESTING .CONTESTS The first track meet of the Gisborne Athletic and Harriers Club’s season, held last evening at the reserve, was interesting for more than one reason. Perhaps the most notable feature of the meet was the return to the amateur fold of G. Murland; the well-known sprinter and footballer, who in late years has been a member of the professional circle, hut who recently secured reinstatement as at “lilywhite.” There was also the'appearance of a really capable field athlete, in G. Lindsay, of Napier, to give tho spectators an idea of the strength of the Hawke’s Bay area, with which Poverty Bay has an engagement for later in the season. Lindsay won the shot putt from scratch, with a very creditable performance; Many of the competitors were far from their best, as the training facilities have not been available until recently, and in any case the majority of the amateurs are not anxious to reach the peak of condition for a few weeks. Results of the various events were as under: — Schoolgirls’ race, 50yds. (10 entries). —Milly Pritchard 1, Norma Holland 2, Joyce White 3. Time, 7sec. Schoolboys’ race, 50yds. (12 entries).—C.
