LOCAL GROCERY INNOVATION

An innovation for Gisborne in the supply of groceries has been established .ur, \\. -U. V'autier, of Gladstone load. He is opening to-morrow a shop Pes.de ins present premises to be conducted under the help-yoiu’self principle. By tiiis means, lie will be able to make substantial reductions in current prices estimated on,' an average of fully 10 per cent.; on many lines tfiis margin will oe exceeded. 1 )! ‘ The mum principle of the new shop will be that customers will have full op ; ,oi amity for inspection-and selection of the goods at their leisure. Baskets are to he provided for the assembly of tlie goods uy the customer, who removes the requirements from tlie stands, and carries Aiem to the counter, where payment will be made. Assistants will be available in the main portion of the shop to advise customers m regard to the various lines in stock, hut tlie matter of selection will be simplified by the ticketing of all articles with tlie price. This plan will apply to all lines except cigar-’ ettes, tobacco, .confectionery and otherof the smaller articles that may be obtained from the assistants at the counter. Provision is made for tlie handling of largo numbers of people, who will enter the main portion of the shop by a turnstile, and will make their exit by another turnstile at the cash counter. Sir. Vnutier believes that tlie public will appreciate the system of helping themselves, and this, combined with business cm a strictly cash basis, should prove a. decided attraction, more particularly at this period in which the keen buying instinct is strongly 1 developed among a big proportion of the community.
