New Wireless Broadcast
announced in ihe Herald last week, the Radio Broadcasting Co. has decided lo cancel the Wednesday silent -nights in the case of 2YA, Wellington. Henceforward from the first Wednesday in February this station will be on the air. Tho programmes on these occasions, howexer, will be an entirely now departure from anything yet broadcast in this Dominion, or Australia, or oven Britain. 1 The Wednesday programmes will lie made up from recordings of overseas programmes. This must not be confused with gramophone records. Special records, about 2ft. in diameter, will be used, exactly as they arc usetd on the talkies at present. On these records will bo cut Spotted” programmes of wellknown American radio stations. Each record will take about 12 minutes to run. The station from which the programme has been made will make its announcements in tho usual manner, including call signs. All advertising matter has been cut out. Listeners who happen to hear strange call signs on the same wave length as 2YA need not, therefore, imagine that they have heard a new station. All they will he hearing will he 2YA transmitting a programme from some other country. 11 has now become a common practice for many well-known United States stations to “pot” piirt of (heir programmes at the actual time that the item occurs in real life. Occurrences, al times when (lie station is not transmitting can therefore he incorporated subsequently in the evening’s programme. 'l’lic natural development of this new method will bn One actual recording of important events in New Zealand itself. Arrangements have been made already by the broadcasting authorities to instal the necessary plant for (his purpose. Siamese broadcasting programmes include weekly sermons by lord abbots at famous Buddhist shrines, which attract thousands of invisible, but reverent, listeners. The sermons are delivered in Pali and Siamese.
