The correspondent of the Times at Geneva says that a prohibition referendum in Switzerland, on a proposal to enable the Government to control the distillation of schnapps, yielding ;i profit of £1.000,000 yearly, which will he devoted to old age pensions, resulted in acceptance by 4137,340 voles against 314,316.
The legislation follows the development of the Triiwiufacture of schnapps from fruit, after schnapps made from potatoes, which peasants distilled, became a national evil in the last century, necessitating the Government purchasine all potato alcohol for medical and industrial use.
Half Ibe Swiss fruit produce was used to distill a million gallons of schnapps yearly, piving Switzerland the largest liquor consumption per'capita in the whole world.
Tin; Government now purchases fruit schnapns, and the nation is strictly rationed. The remainder is used For industry. Five canton* where the schnapps was freely drunk, despite the deplorable effects on peasants. rejected the legislation, hilt were overruled by tho ■remaining 17.
