TOW LAST'S 23 HOURS PERMANENT REPAIRS HERE, In, tow of the s.s. Pukeko, the disabled cargo steamer Tiroa reached Gisborne shortly after, noon to-day from Auckland, and berthed at the Kait'i wharf at 2 p.m. Although it. is thought that the tailshaft is broken the full extent ofJ the damage cannot be ascertained till the Tiroa goes-en. the- slip hero on Tuesday, when it is hoped to effect permanent repairs.
The tow. from near White Island, where the Tiroa was found, lasted 23 hours, and was carried out without difficulty, although some time was occupied in transferring the tow-line from the Pukeko. , The I'ukeko completed the task without mishap, credit being due to Captain., W; Clark fop the capable manner in which he handled his vessel.
When the mishap occurred the Tiroa was about 16 mites off White Island, stated Captain J. .Ik Owen, who has command of the vessel. The Tiroa hoveto shortly after rr.pn on 'Tuesday, and five members of the crew set out in the ship’s boat for the island. Fine weather prevailed, and the'Tiroa drifted about all that night. She, was sighted early next morning by the Pukeko, which later came alongside, and when the tow-line had been made fast the Pukeko proceeded towards the island in order to pick up the five men. who had gone for assistance the previous .afternoon. They were.taken on board, and the long tow commenced. The conditions, were favorable,, and good - progress was made to Gisborne. The Tiroa was met in the roadstead by. the Harbor Poard's launch Takatimu, which towed her to the wharf. -• .. ; >. , The Tiroa commenced Go discharge her Auckland cargo immediately she berthed, and iti iscexpected that the greater portion of this wilk be put out before this evening. The permanent repairs to he effected,.a tf Gisborne wilkbe facilitated, by the slip here, thus enabling'the stern to he raised clear of the. water in ordgr to carry out a thorough examination. When the vessel is ready for will re-load a . quantity qf,. cargo for Coast bays, ■vyhich . was , p.ysrcari;ied>, in consequence of the mr/>lmp,, and, is, expected to sail op'Wednesday-for, Tolaga Hay. Tokonriaru Hay, Hicks Bay, and Auckland. Definite advice received this afternoon by». the Gisborne Shepfarmers’ Frozen Meat and Mercantile Co. witli regard to the motor ship Margaret W, which is on the slip at Auckland for overhaul and survey, indicates that she,will load, there op Tuesday, and sail on Tuesday evening for Coast bays and Gisborne, arriving here on Thursday. It is the intention of the owners nof,. tp replace the . Tiroa in the Auckland-. Fast ( Coast-Gisborne service duripg ths. period required for, repairs, the vessel resuming her timetable when she arrives at Auckland at the end of next week No. decision had beer reached this afternoon concerning the declaring of a general average on the cargo in view of the-mishap It is thought, that any notion in this direction, wi.ll probably be delayed till the,read extent of the accident is ascertained when the Tiroa is placed on the slip.
