With regard to the relief of unemployment-, the District Engineer, Mr. 0. G. Thornton, forwarded a circular to the Cook County Council, which met to day. The circular stated, inter alia :
“Very few counties up to the present have taken advantage of the offer of £1 for £1 subsidies on road relief works, and it is thought that in some cases local bodies may he prepared to assist (he Government in relieving unemployment by proceeding with formation and widening of settlement roads as relief worlds on a £1 for' £1 basis, especially in the case of roads which require widening in readiness for metalling next season. In some special cases it may even be possible to recommend metalling jobs. ’—The letter was received.
