DRAINAGE AREAS
REPONGAERE LAND OBJECTIONS TO SCHEME A number of object ions have been lodged to a drainage scheme at Jtcpongaere, and a deputation of settlers in support of the proposal waited on the Cook County Council to-day. The deputation comprised Messrs. N. Bull, E. R. Renner, 1). Hair, A. J. Judd, and Smith (representing Wi Pore estate). The county clerk, Mr. F. 'l'. .Robinson, said the ratepayers’ petition was signed bv a suliicient number of ratepayers, but there were objections which would have to be considered. Mr. Bull contended that one of the objectors could not maintain his position, and that that objection could not stand, therefore. Another property, the owner of which had objected, secured a great deal of benefit, as the land drained into the area concerned. Another objector on behalf of his wife, the • owner, could be overruled, for the wife, a Maori who could not road or write, had had 1 lie proposals explained to her, and she had fixed her mark to the petition.
The matter was discussed further in commit tee.
