SUSPICIOUS FIRE
BURNT MATCHES ON FLOOR An outbreak of tire, with strong evidence pointing towards incendiarism following a burglarious entry, occurred m t'almerston North early on Wednesday morning, when the Fire Brigade was called to a confectionery shop at the corner of Featherslon and Carroll streets. When the brigade arrived at 2.30 a.in. it found the glass in the front door broken, and on entering discovered that the lire had broken out in two places under the counter in the shop and in a cupboard at the rear of the premises. In the storeroom flames had gained no great hold, however, and were easily suppressed. The counter and cupboard where the two separate outbreaks occurred had been filled with paper. Burnt matches were scattered on the floor. So far as is knrAvn, nothing was stolen. i:be position is regarded as highly suspicious, and the police are investigating. The building was owned by Mrs. Baker and was occupied by Messrs. Clarke Bros., who conducted a combined fruit, confectionery, and dairy business. The building was insured for _ £3OO and the stock was covered In' a similar amount.—Dominion.
