FARMING IN FAR NORTH
EFFORTS OF THE MAORIS MINISTER IMPRESSED “While at To Kao, in the North, 1 was particularly interested in the'work of the -Maori Land Development Board, of which Judge Achoson, of the Native Land Court, is president, and Mr. Watt, the schoolmaster, is a member. Both those iuen have the welfare of the natives at heart. The work achieved to date certainly merits encouragement, said the Hon. A\. P>. Taverner, Commissioner of State Forests, on the completion of his tour of North Auckland. Mr. Taverner explained that ho had previously arranged with Mr. Phillips-, Turner, Director of State Forests, to look over To Kao district, in order to advise Judge Achoson upon the possibility of establishing a forestry area. “It was found on inspection that liiucli research work and practical investigation would have to be undertaken before any announcement could be made,” said 1 lie Minister. “Realising, however, the great suitability of the population concerned, and the benefits which would fall on the people, if a scheme of afforestation were opened up, and which would also provide continuous employment side by side with the development of the district by the natives’ own efforts, in dairying, I intend going thoroughly into tile matter with flic technical officers of my department. “I was informed at To Kao that there are GO native suppliers of! cream, sending out their products over a road which at the best could only be described as in an indifferent condition. This particular area, il is interesting to note, is not at present subject, to rating.”—Star.
