NORFOLK ISLAND

PROPOSED HARBOR WORKS (Special to the Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day. A recent visitor to Norfolk Island is the head of a large firm of engineers in Sydney, who specialises in harbor works. He made a close study of the Cascades landing, which is eventually used on an average 'of eight times out of ten. His company has offered to extend the existing pier and make an elbow inside of which small boats could safely lie, to lay a double line of rails from the pier to the foreshore, replace the present old sheds with new ones, and provide a five ton crane for lifting boats and launches clear of the water when not in use.

The price is such that a fee of Id per package on the cargo at present handled would, it is said, pay interest on the cost. Exports and imports arc increasing rapidly, and the firm’s offer presents quite an attractive appearance to the islanders.
