DAIRY PRODUCE EXPORTS

CANADIAN FREIGHT RATES ALLEGED DISCRIMINATION LONDON, Aug. 15. The. Times correspondent at Ottawa cables that the Montreal Butter and Cheese Exportics Association lias issued a circular letter charging that' discrimination in ocean freight rates exists against Canadian farm produce, owing to the influence of an organisation called the “North Atlantic United Kingdom Trade Conference of New York. Tho basic allegation is that whereas the ocean rate for refrigerator space from New Zealand for a, di.taiu'e of 12,000 miles is 1 dollar 60 cents per ICOlh. with canal tolls allowcj for, yet the freight for a voyage of 30C3 miles from Canadian to British pmas is 70 cents per 1001 b for refrigerator space and 55 cents for non-refrigerator space, a,nd the contention is made that on the basis of the New Zealand rates a ffinrate for non-refrigerator spate from Canada, should be 40 cents per ICOib. with a- corresponding reduction for cold storage space. The circular uiges the Ministers ot Agriculture and of Trade and 1 'mnnicree, along with representatives of (lie dairy industry, must raise the- issue sharply and demand a complete inquiry into the situation if Canada is to maintain her position as an exporter of dairy produce and bacon. In recent years bnttei exports have virtually ceased, there has been a- serious curtailment ol the export trade- in bacon, and this year has witnessed a glut on the local cheese markets, owing to the feebleness ol tinexport demand. New Zealand competition ha; been an important factor in tho decline in the dairy export- trade, and Canada s impovs of butter from New Zealand have been furnishing, ammunition to Conservative politicians, who are criticising the tariff policies of the Kiiie Ministry. The Montreal Gazette editorially supports the demand for an inquiry. -Auckland Herald.
