TESTS OF N.Z. WOODS
BENEFIT TO U.S.A. PROTEST FROM HAWKE'S BAY
At a recent meeting of the executive committee of the. Hawke's Bay A. and P. .Society, exception was taken to tho benefit to be derived by the. Government of the United States from the recent tests on New Zealand woods performed by the Forest Products Laboratory, Wisconsin, on behalf of the New Zealand Government.
The. society was advised by the Commissioner of State Forests that the position, briefly, was that this was one of the stipulations under which the United States Government undertook the work for the Dominion. It was obvious that the New Zealand Government would have preferred to co-operate with some Empire organisation, but a comprehensive" world-wide survey showed that no such suitable institution was available It was found that the Coiled States Government was also interested in the pulping of hardwoods and it, therefore, appeared economical lor Ibe two countries to combine their resources in solving the problem. New Zealand had much more to gain by this co-operation than the United States, and there appeared to be little doubt that but for the help of that Government the Dominion would have been unable to undertake the work for many years, or to secure the promising results already reported. Mr. Tod: The Government Ins not told us what benefits the United States Government are to get. Mr. Absolum: It is said that the United States is the only place where these tests can he carried out, but I am not so sure of that. It is up to us to see that the British people get these benefits.
It was decided that the department should be written to asking what the benefits that will go to the Unite.! States Government are to be.-Tribune.
