COAST RUGBY

TOKOMARU BAY GAMES (Herald Correspondent.; After a lapse of two weeks owing to representative matches elsewhere, the | local matches attracted a large gathering ' of interested spectators. The usual senior and junior competition having been de--1 cided. interest largely centred in the contest between the City and Wanderers junior teams, which met to contest the Aiiey Banner in the knock-out competi- . tion. j After their defeat recently by City ' in the junior cup competition, it was only to be expected that Wanderers would be on their mettle to register a counter win, but the game amply de.mon- ' strated the superiority of City, as the result was 19 to 0 in their favor. City were captained by Ken Carey, Ron. Murphy guiding the Wanderers' forlorn hope. '.Mr. J. Coekery was in charge of the whistle. ■ One of the. characteristics of City's play throughout the. season lias been the amount of dash and vim put in at the commencement of their games, and this was again manifested on Saturday, when six points wen' notched in the first 10 minutes. Hallever was the first to get over, after some brilliant work; and this score was quickly followed by a similar try by Williams, neither being converted. Wanderers then got down to business, and for the remainder of the spell, by good defensive work, kept the game iii midfield, until Hale broke away and scored a good try, which again was I unconverted. Half-time sounded with i City leading by 9 to 0. ! From the start of the second spell City pressed, and after a pretty passing J rush by the backs 1). Fmeny got over. Wanderers were on the defensive from then on, anil only hard work by their i forward line kept the score from being I much more in City's favor. Hale, for ' City, livened up interest by potting a [ neat goal. The last score, just on time, was the result- of a good passing rush, McDonald, a nippy back, giving Jackson an opening to get over, and the game ended: City 19; Wanderers 0. WANDERERS 14 BEAT CITY 8 City seniors fielded the strongest team of the season under the captaincy of A. Forrester, while Brian Barker, this season's 'acquisition to Coast Rugby, was in charge, of Wanderers' tactics. Mr. .). Corbett controlled the game in his usual fair, decisive manner. The forward packs were very even, I but Wanderers' backs, including both Burke and Gaddum, whose brilliant ! work throughout the season both m local and representative matches has been an ■ outstanding feature of this year's p'.ay, i wow superior to City rearguard. The game wa.s keenly contested throughout, ij tries being scored for Wanderers by Gaddum, Poutu, and Toriau, one of | which was converted. The score was j completed by a penalty goal by Gaddum. "For City, tries were scored by Barj ney and J. Lynch, the latter being coni verted by A. Karauria.
