TOO PROUD TO ASK
SECOND EDITION.
UNEMPLOYMENT DISTRESS RELIEF TOR THE NEEDY A number of cases in which Gisborne families arc in very straitened circumstances have been mentioned in these columns, and relief has been given. Possibly help would have bepn extended earlier had notification been given to the proper quarters, but there appears to be a certain reluctance by some to seek charity. Two outstanding cases of indigence were mentioned at the musicians' concert i" the Opera House last night by Mr. S. V. Beaufoy, secretary of this movement to supply funds for the institution of relief works in the borough. til one case, he said, a family of live were forced to sleep under sacks, while in ■.mother instance a mother and three children were almost starving while the lather was in hospital seriously ill. Interviewed this morning, Mr. Beaufoy stated that the two cases he quoted last night were the worst that had come under his notice, but he knew of several other families who required assistance. Help had been given wherever possible, but he stated that in some, instances the families were too proud to ask for assistance. The fund raised by the musicians' concerts had been responsible for the employment of 14 or 15 men. and in placing the men on these works, an endeavor was made to see that the most deserving cases were being helped. By further efforts it was hoped to secure employment for more men, ami to keep the fund augmented by additional, concerts.
