RABBITS DECREASE
POSITION IN CANTERBURY (Special to the Herald.) OHRLSTCHURCH, this day. All the stock inspectors in the Canterbury and Kaikoura districts have reported to the Department of Agriculture that there has been a marked diminution in the number of rabbits in the areas under their control. An officer of the department claimed vesterday (hat there was not one property in , Canterbury now that was really badly infested" with rabbits; in fact," many rabbiters were unable to obtain blocks on. which to trap or poison where they would obtain a payable number of skins. So sparse was the rabbit population on some of the large holdings that farmers were compelled to pay men to poison or trap when this was deemed necessary. Cases were quoted of settlers a few years ago being compelled, been use of the numbers of rabbits, to leave farms which to-day were practically free of the pest. Their natural enemies are also causing great mortality among young rabbits.
