ORDERS-IN-COUNCIL

GENERAL OPPOSITION INTERFERENCE WITH BUSINESS (Special to the Herald.) CHETSTCnURCH, this day. The business community of Christchurch endorses heartily tho remarks concerning government by Ordcr-in-Council made in a paper read to the legal conference on Wednesday by Mr. A. F. Wright. Mr. Wright claimed that the rights of the individual were being taken away by this form of legislation'; and that.foo much power was deputed to the heads of Government departments. The interference of the Government in all forms of business is keenly resented. A reporter sought opinions from representative business men, and in all instances, except one, business men supported Mr. Wright. Mr. W. Hayward, chairman of the Citizens' Association, and a prominent business man, said that he agreed entirely with Mr. Wright. "I agree absolutely with Mr. Wright," said Mr. C. P. Agar, president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, " and I have no hesitation in saying that every member of the business community thinks the same as I. do. The Government is always hindering business with this form of legislation, and I may say that the question is.receiving the attention of business men." "There is scarcely a business which cannot produce instances of Government interference," said Mr. W. Macliin, general manager of the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association of iCanterbury.' "This is particularly so in the meat and dairy produce and similar businesses. Any suggestion that this interference by the Government is mote prevalent in England than in New Zealand is incorrect. The Government. has injured private enterprise, and 1 agree entirely with Mr. Wright." •"Up to a certain point I agree with Mr. Wright," paid another well-known business man. "I, think, however, that his paper deals more with England than New Zealand. There is one good point about these regulations. If they do not meet with public approval they can "be repealed immediately instead of another session of Parliament having to be waited for." Other- opinions coincided with those of Mr. Wright.
