ALLEGED KIDNAPPING RESULT OF INQUIRY (Received July 11. 2 p.m.) BRISBANE, July 11_. In connection with the shanghaiing story cabled On Saturday, a Customs officer at Townsvillo held an inquiry. He examined a number of Chinese brought ashore from the vessel. Although the inquiry was held in private, it is learned thai the evidence did" not support the somewhat lurid accounts of conditions aboard. There was nothing to uphold the suggestion of kidnapping, and from their appearance the witnesses were in good condition and healthy. They complained V>f a shortage of the water supply, and the inadequate sanitary provision, but admitted that with the size of the vessel and the number aboard they did not see how things could be improved. [At a largely-attended meeting at Townsville allegations were made that between 4CO and 500 Annamese coolies aboard the steamer Hai Hum, at present in Townsville harbor, had been kidnapped. It was alleged l at the meeting that the coolies had been shanghaied from the French concession of Wongchow-Won, after being given drugged cigarettes, and were consigned to the mines in the New Hebrides.]
