THE AMERICAN OBJECTIONS '
BRITISH PRESS COMMENT
(British Official Wireless.)
Rec, 2 p.m. LONDON, July 10. Commenting on the cruiser problem, the Manchester Guardian regards the 10.000 tons type of cruiser as needlessly large, and expresses surprise at the United States refusal to accept the smaller class of vessel, and its growing conviction that this insistence on larger cruisers is endangering the conference.
The 'Guardian adds: "It can hardly bo doubted tlini n complete ngi'eempnt could yot lio reached if America would agree to abandon lingo, heavily-gunned ships, which are really only suited to aggressive warfare." Other newspapers point out that the American proposals to keep the total cruiser tonnage at si low figure.' while not accepting a reduction in the sizes and guns, would not permit the British Empire the number of ships for peace work and defence measures necessitated by the geographical situation of the Empire, and the dependence of Britain upon overseas supplies.
