80 GATES IN GREAT NEW BARRAGE. LONDON, May 6. There was keen competition for the contract of the Nag Ilamadi barrage on the Nile, for which the lowest tender, £2,027,300, is that, of Sir John Jackson, Ltd.. London. Some 15 firms are known to have tendered, including German, Italian, French, and American-con-trolled. , , _ , The barrage will be about 1000 yards in length, the width of the foundation being just over 100 yards. Taking about three years to complete, the dam will he of\ masonry, with d 0 gates to regulate, the height # ol (lie water. .The gates will be of steel, and there will also be steel piles in the masonry. About 800,000 tons of masonry and cement will be needed, and the woik will also include a lock and a legulating entrance for the water to an irrigation canal for the surrounding country.
