October 6, What is described as the most remarkable scene ever known in the Church Congress occurred at Southport, following ou the reading of a paper written just before jus death on August 28 by Professor J. 0. The Professor concluded:—"! want to make it clear that a scientist may arrive at a clear knowledge of religious truth by the very methods employed at his own work. More' and more, as lite years have passed, I have become convinced that love of God is everything, and, if man possesses this, all other things are secondary. This life is not the end. The soul is immortal." After the reading, the Archbishon of York, with upraised hand, said:— "These words from a dying man are too important for us to pass quickly to lesser things." The Archbishop asked for silent meditation, whereupon everyone in the crowded hall rose up and stood silently while the clock measured off' three minutes.
