A PROMINENT PLACE
GERMAN GOODS IN N.Z. REGAINING A HOLD (Special to the Herald.) CIIR.ISTCHURCH, this day. German fancy goods and German glassware are taking a prominent, place in the stocks, which merchants are, or have been receiving] for the new seasou. A more or less partial re-estab-lishment of the part Germany once hold in Hie Dominion's trade has always been regarded as inevitable, and: if patriotic feelings are in any way affronted by direct buying from a late enemy, merchants can point, as an excuse, to the fact that for many classes of goods purchases made with London often include lines that have their origin in Germany. German glassware, a reporter was informed to-day, is being landed ati a cost of about. 15 per cent below glassware from Japan andi Belgium, a rise in the Japanese exchange being unfavorable to importers. Germany is cater ing mostly for ordinary domestic and hotel use, and is not a serious competitor in high, quality stuff as yet. There is some complaint that Germany docs not fully understand the particular requirements of the. Dominion in the way of sizes and such like, but no doubt that trouble will disappear eoon.
