Lcvvcy, S.'.M., when a long lils or' cases was dealt with. P. Carroll, for drunkenness in Carroll street, was convicted and fined Ills. Ted Winiata, who did not appear, was charged jointly with Tipcnc Thompson, the latter pleading- not guilty, to behaving in a threatening manner in Carroll street on September 4.—Constables Tuck and Coddington slated that both men were found in grips at a. Chinaman's shop, Winiata appearing i,o be the aggressor.—The defendant, Tipene, said the other man was jealous and he merely warded oft' Ilio blows.-—Both, were lined £2 ami costs, ISs and .14s respectively. BY-LAW BREACHES. The Wairoa County Council (Mr. C. V r . Chamberlain) proceeded against J. H. Baty (Mr. Green), who pleaded guilty to using a motor lorry with grips to the injury of wheeled traffic roads. Mr. Chamberlain having detailed the ease, Mr. Green pleaded fhn.t the by-law was a new one. The Magistrate: And a very necessary one. In imposing a fine of £2 and costs £2 lis. the Magistrate said he had power to fine up to £lO, or £"> a day. The police chtirged R. ( S. MeFarlanu* with having driven ti motor car on the wrong side of the road near tinsilent policeman at the end of the Wairoa bridge. Defendant was lined £2. and costs 7s. The county traffic inspector. Thomas Otago Browne (Mr. Chamberlain) proceeded against W. Clarke, Stanley Clarke and H. J. Peacock, for having left unlighted lorries on either side or the Napiex-Wairoa road, near Turiroa. Mr. Sainsbury pleaded guilty on behalf of his clients, and said that unfortunately they had failed to get the Council's permission to leave them there at night while metalling. Fines of £.l each, and costs £1 ss, were imposed. A.. Fox, Cor "whom Mr. Lnngley appeared, was charged with failing to produce his lorry license when called on to do so. Mr. Chamberlain, representing the iuspeetor, said the license had not been produced till that day.-—Defen-dant was convicted rind ordered to pay costs, £1 Bs. MISCELLANEOUS CASES D. >Solomon, .Sonny Mataiia, and liiki Whaanga (Mr. Sainsbury) were I each lined £2 and costs 12s for being ' on licensed premises, the Clyde hotel, ; during prohibited hours. It was explained that rival teams were dining together, and these men waited in the lounge for their mates. L. Borth was charged with disobeying a maintenance order, the arrears being £l2 13s to December 14, 102"), when the liability ceased. The defendant stated that as a result of an injury ho had not been able to do hard work. —The case was adjourned to November .". to enable the defendant to pay some of the arrears off. Sydney Whatuna was charged by the Education Board (Mr. Chamberlain), with failing to send his child to school. Having given an undertaking jto see that the Act was observed, the | defendant was only ordered to pay costs, £1 4s Grl. ! A. S. Taylor, for a breach of his i prohibition order, was fined £2 and costs, 15s, John -.Miller, for refusing to quit the Clyde hotel when ordered to do so by the licensee, was fined £2 and costs. P. ,T. Single, licensee of the Perry hotel (Mr. Sainsbury), pleaded not guilty to allowing a chimney to catch tire. Mr. Sainsbury admitted that the chimney was on fire but it was not wilfully done. The defendant stated that on September 2 the fire-bell rang, and he went round, and saw no fire, except sparks coming out of a chimney. Some one had thrown on some light wood or a paper. He had an inspection made every four months, and the cleaner had orders to sweep when needed. The Court held there was no negligence and dismissed the case.
