RUATORIA NOTES
A week ago I hoi contimiprl spell of dry weather looked serious. Now the week's intermittent rain -has altered things, and the country is an absolute picture Bain foil lightly here, but in the back cpuntrj and further north a good soaking wait experienced. .Monday saw the Awatere unfordable, and also tho Waiapu. Good docking tallies are being spoken of by sheep men, and these people are likely to make up in quantity what tbciy will likely lose in price for' fat lambs. Buyers are beginning to more than skirmish for the nervous man anxious to quit Ins stock. Prospects all point to a year of prosperity for the coast—given the weather, of course. The local butler factory is in full swing, cream carts running three time.-, a week. A number of new suppliers have started. It is unfortunate that prices are so jioor, as the new industry herd is much bandicapped in this respect. Howovcr, it> is hoped that suppliers wil. be able to increase their supplies, ami thus to some extent lose sight of the small payment, which, of course, is general throughout Now Zealand. The officials of the local company advise that they have sold all of their produce sent overseas, the price being bettor than that at present ruling. The football season has finished, and without the promised Poverty Bay visit. It is a pity that the wind-up locally was unpleasant on account of the suspension of two local officials. It is understood that there is a movement on foot to obtain a pakdha school for the township. A large number of pakeha children attend the native school at present, and it is contended, rightly or wrongly, that the methods of education at the native schools arc not the same as in the other State schools.
