LOW DEATH RATE
HEALTHY NEW ZEALAND COMPARATIVE FIGURES (Special to the Herald.) WELLINGTON, this day. For 1925, comparing it with other countries, the. Government Statistician is able to demonstrate that the average of England and Wales--100 deaths per. 10,000 population— if it- prevailed in the Dominion would mean that 1500 more deaths would 1 he registered! every year. New Zealand’s rate per 100,000 is 85.88, a favorable position which, says the Statistician, is cc-ninnm lo practically every item, with the exception of infantile paralysis, the high rate for which in 1025—13 per 100,000 —was due to the severe epidemic in. the early part of the. year. The average rate for Dm five preceding years was only seven per 100.000. The death rate in New Zealand from tuberculosis and influenza is remarkably low in comparison, while the rates for measles, scarlet fever, whooping cough, and diphtheria are, also considerably lower than the figures shown for England and Wales, and the United. States.
